Keep Baton Rouge Beautiful's
Anti-Cigarette Litter Campaign

As part of a bigger initiaive of Keep America Beautiful, KBRB is working to reduce cigarette litter in the Baton Rouge Area. Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world.

KBRB has been providing outdoor cigarette receptacles at transition points where smokers need to dispose of their cigarettes when entering or exiting a business. To date 90 units have been placed throughout Baton Rouge, primarily in the Downtown area and Mid City. Funds for the purchase of the receptacles were provided by grants from the Downtown Merchants Association and Keep Louisiana Beautiful.

Cigarette butts discarded from cars, on sidewalks, and in the street are unsightly and demonstrated to be harmful to the environment. Cigarette litter takes seven years or longer to decompose, and it gets washed into local watersheds where the residual nicotine is toxic to wildlife and the accumulated mess mars the beauty of our community. Smokers often don't realize that cigarette butts are litter too, and don't understand their cumulative impact. Our goal is to reduce the problem by providing disposal units that we know smokers will use.
