Other KBRB Programs
- Trash Your Mind Trivia CD Using funding from a Louisiana
DEQ Litter Abatement Grant, a CD format computer game based on the familiar
"You Don't Know Jack" game developed by the Shreveport KAB affiliate
was re-mastered for use in Baton Rouge as an education/curriculum tool
for class room use by teachers in the 4th - 6th grades. This age group
was targeted with the understanding that they are most likely to adopt
positive attitudes about litter abatement and prevention when exposed in
a familiar electronic game format. CD copies were distributed to all science
teachers of this age group in Greater Baton Rouge area schools.
- Anti-Litter Poster Contests To promote an understanding
of litter issues and an appreciation of the impact on their lives, students
in elementary school grades are encouraged to participate in poster contests
associated with the Great American Clean-Up and Beach Sweep. Tangible awards
for winners in several age categories, such as Wal-Mart gift certificates,
provide further excitement among the winners and their schools.
- Community Breakfast Using funds from a DEQ Litter Abatement
Grant, a Community Breakfast was held this year at a local hotel to recognize
and honor partners of KBRB and participants in our various programs. We
anticipate making this an annual recognition event.
- Litter Card Program KBRB has provided pre-printed post
cards that can be used when littering from motor vehicles is observed,
as a means to gently correct this undesirable behavior. The license plate
number, time and location of the littering is entered in a form on the
card, which is then mailed to the Baton Rouge Police Department. A letter
is then sent from that agency to the registered owner of the vehicle that
reports the observed behavior and requests that littering not be repeated
in the future. Over 1,700 cards have been submitted. This program has been
discontinued.
- Adopt-A-Spot The Adopt-A-Spot program encourages community
organizations, businesses, fraternal organizations, and others to adopt
a stretch of road or highway and regularly collect and properly dispose
of any trash discarded on that road. It is well established that the presence
of trash promotes a sense of enablement to some individuals who feel little
remorse at adding to existing litter. This popular program of KBRB has
now been assumed by the local city-parish government.
- Community Outreach Programs Whenever possible, KBRB Board
members participate in local events and programs to provide educational
materials and to promote awareness of litter problems and local intervention
programs. These have included Baton Rouge Earth Day, Can Do Conference,
Hill Top Arboretum Day, Kenilworth Subdivision 4th of July Parade, and
others.
- Grants KBRB has submitted a number of grant proposals
in competitive funding programs to address particular projects or programs.
These have included the following:
Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality Litter Abatement Grant
Program. Two KBRB grants were funded in the past through this program,
one of which funded our Trash Your Mind Trivia CD project and Community
Breakfast.
US EPA Environmental Education Grant Program a proposal titled
"Environmental University" has been submitted to the US EPA.
This project proposes a one-week summer (2004) educational experience for
sixth-grade youth to learn about environmental careers and conservation
issues with a hands-on approach. Students will visit environmental sites
and participate in interactive sessions to help them understand the world
around them and their impact on it.
ExxonMobil Community Grant Program several small grants ($1-3K)
under this program have provided the means to purchase office equipment
(computer, etc) and supplies for KBRB programmatic needs.
